Albay teacher stabbed to death

PIODURAN, Albay (Bicol Standard) -- A teacher was stabbed to death by an unidentified assailant at around 11 p.m. Tuesday at Oringon Elementary School here.

Police Senior Inspector Joseph Abel Jarabejo, Pioduran police chief said the 23-year-old teacher Mylene Durante y Veras had been sleeping in the principal's office because she was a resident of Polangui town which is around 44 kilometers from her assignment.

Jarabejo narrated that based on initial information, there were signs of struggle inside the room that the teacher used as her sleeping quarter.

The investigators theorize that there is a possibility that the teacher knew the suspect, as there was no sign of forcible entry.

Also sharing the room were her two grade 6 pupils, Mechie Orbigo y Plaida and Hazel dela Vega y Pabelonia, both residents of Oringon, this town.

The pupils were probably awakened when the teacher screamed, the police. They were pursued by the suspect with a bladed weapon but escaped to an adjacent room, which they were able to lock.

The suspect went back to the teacher, who was already outside the room. She was stabbed several times, the police said.

Her lifeless body was found outside the principal's office.

Interviewed by the media on the possibility that there was an attempt to rape her, the investigators said they noticed that the victim's shorts were unzipped. However, this remains under investigation.

They also said that robbery was probably not the motive since nothing was reported to be missing.

Meantime, the pupils, who also had stab wounds, were rushed to Pioduran Memorial District Hospital for medical treatment.

PSI Jarabejo added that the school is located in a remote area, and there was no security guard.

The police chief promised they will give due attention to the case.

Asked if the incident is drug-related, he said that he has ordered the review of the list of drug surrenderers.

He is also appealing to anyone who may have information on the incident to report the same to the police.
